Staying Union Free Is Critical

For Successful Organizations

Union avoidance continues to be a major priority for millions of businesses, manufacturers, institutions and other employers and, for good reasons.

Staying union free not only allows you to operate your organization as you see fit, it can save you millions of dollars over a period of time.

If you are not successful at avoiding unionization or staying union free, some studies suggest your labor costs will increase by at least 25 to 35 percent on the average, once your business or institution is unionized, not counting one cent toward additional wages and benefits.

If you fail in your union avoidance efforts, part of the 25 to 35 percent increase in labor costs is a direct result of lost production because of typical relaxed work rules, inferior quality of products or service due to the difficulty of terminating employees who are unwilling or unable to perform their jobs satisfactorily and the difficulty of attracting, satisfying and keeping customers, clients, etc.

Also, a portion of this 25 to 35 percent increase in labor costs as a result of being unionized relates to the expense of negotiations, administration of collective bargaining agreements and the costs of fighting grievances and arbitration cases.

Additional costs associated with unionization sometimes occur because of work stoppages and other such job interruptions and, the resultant loss of customers and business.

A successful union avoidance program consists of two components:

  • One, an understanding and implementation of the ten union free standards addressed in the best-selling book, How To Stay Union Free. This simply means all levels of management must be trained on the fundamental concepts, principles and strategies of staying union free and such principles and strategies must be implemented and maintained.

  • Two, the organization must have periodic assessments (frequently referred to as union vulnerability audits) to determine whether management is complying with the union free standards addressed in the book, How To Stay Union Free.
